Modi himself will lead the first International Yoga Day in India by performing asanas at Rajpath in Delhi along with more than 35,000 people, in what could go down as a world record. Rajpath is being readied for the big day, which is believed to be as grand as Republic Day celebrations.
The United Nations had declared 21 June as the International Day of Yoga after PM Modi's speech at the UN General Assembly last year, in which he called for a global day dedicated to Yoga.
Rajpath has been readied for the biggest gathering of Yoga enthusiasts that could make a world record for "the largest Yoga demonstration at a single venue".
The event is expected to be as grand as the Republic Day celebrations held in the capital, and has warranted equal security arrangements.
The venue will be fitted with 23 LED screens and 150 CCTV cameras and will be manned by 3,000 police personnel. The Indian armed forces are also preparing to join in the Yoga Day celebrations in full force, with an event reportedly planned even in Siachen, the highest battleground in the world. Yoga has been one of India’s most important contributions to the world with a universal aim of introducing it as means to adopt a holistic approach to life. The UN General Assembly has formally recognised this when it adopted an India-led resolution to recognize the year’s longest day in the Northern Hemisphere as International Yoga Day.

Following the speech, a resolution was proposed to the United Nations, asserting on the need for a day dedicated to yoga. Highlighting the virtues of yoga, the resolution had noted that it was needed for "the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health."
The resolution was then endorsed by record 177 countries within a short span of 100 days. Referring to this, the Prime Minister, during his 'Mann Ki Baat' programme on May 31, 2017, said that no resolution had ever been passed by the United Nations with such record support in a short span of 100 days.
Taking note of the importance of the International Day of Yoga, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has asked its member nations to urge their citizens to reduce physical inactivity, which is one of the major causes of death worldwide.
Referring to the recognition of June 21 as an international day of yoga, 69th UNGA President Sam Kutesa pointed that "people from all walks of life have practiced yoga for centuries".
The ministry of AYUSH would place several LED screens in the area for which Doordarshan may provide its signal.All India Radio (AIR) too has planned a series of programmes related to International Yoga Day and would also cover the Rajpath event live.
